Repairs made to the new Parkhill Road/Warsaw Road swing bridge in Peterborough’s east end may not have accomplished what officials were hoping for.

Earlier this month, the bridge was closed for four days while workers addressed concerns of a “clanking” noise when traffic crossed the structure, particularly when vehicles headed northbound.

The crossing was closed to traffic for about eight months — until midsummer of 2021 — for a full replacement of the steel swing bridge structure, repairs to concrete abutments, and replacement of mechanical and electrical operating systems. 

But earlier this year, residents living near the bridge began to complain about the noise. Trent Severn officials promised to address the issue. They announced plans to remove, repair, and reattach selected grating panels of the metal bridge deck to reduce noise caused by vehicles using the bridge.

This week, a new notice went out acknowledging the repairs may not have accomplished what was desired.

“Parks Canada continues to monitor the Warsaw Road Swing Bridge and the reported reoccurrence of noise caused by the passing of vehicles over the bridge plating,” the new notice states.

“In early July, selected grating panels of the metal bridge deck were removed, repaired, and then reattached to the bridge in an attempt to reduce the noise caused by vehicles using the bridge.

“Although the repair of the selected grating panels was successful, additional panels are increasingly affected by the same issue.”

The notice goes on to state that Parks Canada and the contractor are re-evaluating other options to reduce the noise in the short term, prior to completing repairs scheduled for the fall.
