Motorist can once again expect delays while trying to cross the Warsaw Swing Bridge on Parkhill Road in Peterborough.

In a release issued by Parks Canada, it states that work will be done to deal with noise created by grating panels that were recently installed during the bridge replacement.

That replacement took almost eight months which closed the crossing entirely until midsummer 2021. Drivers were asked to use detours around the bridge.

The swing bridge was closed again for four days in July of this year after complaints were made about increased noise from the new grating panels that were installed.

“In early July, selected grating panels on the Warsaw Swing Bridge located on Parkhill Road were removed, repaired and then reattached to the bridge in an attempt to reduce the noise caused by vehicles using the bridge,” reads the release. “Since that time, Parks Canada has been monitoring the bridge and associated noise level to determine if the repair was successful before moving on with a full repair.”

Parks Canada states the repair on the selected grating panels was successful, however additional panels are increasingly being affected by the same issue.

“In advance of the full repair scheduled for this fall, Parks Canada has installed temporary hold-downs on the more problematic panel,” states Parks Canada. “Given the success of this initial trial, additional temporary hold-downs will be installed in the coming days.”

These “hold-downs” will be installed during regular bridge swings, allowing Parkhill Road to remain open.

“Delays due to extended bridge swings can be expected. The repair work will not impact navigation along the waterway,” states Parks Canada.

Traffic control measures which were put in place a few weeks ago to slow down traffic approaching the bridge are still in place and will remain until the temporary work has been completed.

More information will be provided by Parks Canada as it becomes available.

“Parks Canada understands the frustration this situation has caused and would like to thank residents for their patience and understanding,” reads the release.
